AURA, and the organizations behind Giant Magellan Telescope and the Thirty Meter Telescope, GMTO & TIO, acknowledge the findings of the , presented by the U.S. National Science Foundation () on 8 December 2024. The report emphasizes the critical importance of U.S. extremely large telescopes, and the panel confirms that both the Giant Magellan Telescope and the Thirty Meter Telescope have met the requirements to proceed to Final Design Phase, once a governance framework is agreed on.
We thank the distinguished and independent panel for their thorough analysis and recommendations and the NSF for their steadfast support and commitment to advancing U.S. science and technology.
51³Ô¹ÏPro the US Extremely Large Telescope Program
The US Extremely Large Telescope Program () is a joint endeavor of and the organizations building the and the Thirty Meter Telescope. It was ranked as the highest ground-based priority in the Decadal Survey on Astronomy and Astrophysics 2020, published by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine. The US-ELTP would provide unique access to the entire sky from the Northern and Southern hemispheres with a level of precision and sensitivity never seen before. The US-ELTP would maintain US leadership in observational astronomy well into the next generation and beyond.
