Canada Funding for TMT Announced by Prime Minister Stephen Harper

The telescope is being built in the 525-acre Astronomy Precinct, which is the only area astronomy development can take place.

On April 4, 2015 a total lunar eclipse will be visible across the TMT partnership. The moon will be in total eclipse for about 5 minutes, and the eclipse event will last for over 3 hours. The total lunar eclipse, or "blood moon" will be visible in most of North America, South America, Asia and parts of Australia.

During the week of January 26, 2015, the Thirty Meter Telescope performed a series of "shake tests" in El Segundo, California. A major earthquake was simulated to confirm that the telescope's mirror segments would survive without damage.
